Athlete Exclusive: How I Build Training

As many of you know, I build training week-by-week in the vast majority of cases. That doesn't mean that there isn't a larger plan – I have outlines ranging from 3 months to 5 years for each of you! It does mean that the details are planned week-by-week.
The effectiveness of this sort of adaptive training has been proven by research, and is one reason coaching is more effective than a training plan. There's no magical pattern of build weeks and down weeks, and periodization is just a concept which varies depending on your athletic history and how you adapt to each type of workout.
That means that really, I need to know how your previous/current week went in order to create the next one.
What do I look for? Well first of all did you mostly stick to the plan? Nailing the exact minutes/miles doesn't matter that much, but if you missed the interval workout entirely, or had to flip the weekend runs, that means we may want to tweak things the following week.
