Let’s talk about strength training for runners! While research on strength training's role in preventing injury is inconclusive (really!), most runners and coaches recognize its importance to a runner's routine of whole-body fitness. Research is difficult, and it's not always possible to study a variable's true effect in isolation.
Rather than provide specific routines for you to do, in this article I want to go over the background reasons, philosophy and components of strength training as well as guidelines for integrating strength within both your weekly microcycle routine and your long-term structure.
I'll include a handful of exercise recommendations, but your Training Log has some more specific routines, and room for customizing others. You can peruse a large selection in the Strength Exercise Library, and I can help with that customization.
Finally, for more about mobility and self-care, you can check out the corresponding article about Mobility and Recovery, and find more specific exercises in the Mobility and Self-Care Library.
