Athlete Exclusive: The Data Dilemma

Running has always been a simple sport. At its simplest, you don't need anything, though I do generally recommend a pair of shoes.
Over the years, as more and more people have taken up the sport, companies have capitalized on it, and the market has been flooded with thousands of things designed to make your running better. Many of these are great - we have more strength, mobility and recovery tools than ever, and we have countless shoe, sock and apparel brands to choose from. But with this comes an increasing focus on 'tech' and data.
Is this focus on data good? Does it help you run better? The short answer is maybe, but probably not.
We track the metrics we do because they're measurable, not because they're relevant.
There are hundreds of subjective details that play a larger role, and even more internal and external variables that we can't measure or even realize.
